Erica's Teaching Philosophy
It is my believe that everyone – regardless of situation, station, circumstance and/or ability is teachable. I also believe that each of us, is reachable, meaning there’s a unique way to engage and educate even the most challenging students.
The best lesson I ever received towards this understanding was delivered by a 12-year-old special needs scholar, at a school in the Bronx. We had been discussing the importance of self-awareness and navigating difficult emotions. Out of the blue, the young scholar raised his hand with such a fierce and joyous fervor, that I had little choice but to pause and allow him space to share.
‘If you want to feel better,’ he exclaimed, ‘just throw your hands up in the air, throw your head back, and smile with your whole face, really hard! I promise it works!’ He then demonstrated. Without hesitation, I followed his example and so did the rest of the class. We all, instantly, began laughing and smiling and the once dreary classroom was alight with what could only be described as pure joy.
As an educator, I believe is it not only my job, but a moral imperative to create a safe space where students and teachers, are able to receive and give learning. A place where we can all feel safe enough to throw our heads back and our arms up and smile with our whole face.
Erica's Artist Statement
As a multi-disciplined fine and performing artist, my world view is all inclusive. Therefore, I believe that there is no place that exists, in reality or imagination, that is devoid of art.
Acting, performing and the literary arts has been the major focus of my career. I see no separation between who I am and the artistry I create, teach, and witness.
The goal in all I do is to uplift, motivate, inspire and educate. It’s not only how I was raised, but its who I am and who I choose to be in all ways, always.
It is the experience of a lifetime and I foresee no point in my existence where I will be detached from these goals and my artistic nature.
